Dreaming of a spacious walk-in closet at home? It is often thought that a large budget is needed for a walk-in closet. However, it's possible to get started yourself. Building a walk-in closet yourself is much easier than you might think. With tubes and key clamps, you can create a custom walk-in closet. Below, we explain how to make a key clamp walk-in closet and provide you with useful tips!
Design Your Custom Key Clamp Walk-in Closet
Key clamp materials are highly suitable for these structures. The material is strong and sturdy, and it can bear a lot of weight. Thanks to the wide range of key clamps, many possibilities are available, and nearly any design is achievable. You can give the closet your desired look using different types of key clamps. The galvanized tubes create a tough, industrial appearance.
Clothing Rail Attached to the Wall
A walk-in closet can be very easily made with a wall to wall clothing rail using key clamps. You can install the rail along the entire length of the wall. Often, two rails are mounted one above the other for sufficient storage space. You can also place a chest of drawers or a shoe rack under the rail. This type of design is perfect if you want a sleek industrial style clothes rail look for your walk-in closet.
Clothing Rail with Shelves
A clothing rail with shelves is ideal for long garments and extra storage space for shoes and accessories. A key clamp clothes rail combined with shelves offers a sturdy and stylish solution. You can easily hang long dresses or pants from the clothing bar. Using key clamps, you can secure a shelf to the clothing rack.
Wardrobe with Clothing Rail
The most common walk-in closet design is a full key clamp wardrobe with a clothing rail and storage shelves. The wardrobe is secured to both the floor and the wall. In some cases, the wardrobe is also mounted to the ceiling, depending on the design and its sturdiness. In the wardrobe, you can include a rail for hanging clothes, and below the rail, you can leave space for a shoe rack.
Tips for Building a Walk-in Closet
The right tube diameter
Whether you are designing a scaffold clothes rail for an industrial space or a lighter home version, choosing the correct diameter is essential. For a clothing rail, use a pipe diameter of 26.9 mm or 33.7 mm. With a larger diameter, most hangers will not fit over the rail.
For a wardrobe with a clothing rail, you can also use diameters of 26.9 mm and 33.7 mm. If it's a large closet with lots of storage, go for 33.7 mm for extra strength.
Flanges
A walk-in closet is rarely freestanding and is often attached to the floor, wall, and/or ceiling. flanges are perfect for securing the wardrobe. The flanges are very sturdy thanks to the sufficient mounting points (screw holes) in the flange. There are two types of flanges: round and oval. The round flange is most commonly used to attach the structure. It can be used as a foot on the floor or mounted on the wall. Sometimes, you will see wardrobes mounted with oval flanges. Oval flanges are stronger than round ones due to the double set screw and the large oval flange. This makes them great for use with heavy loads or as hangers.
Key Clamps for Shelves
There are different ways to make shelves in a wardrobe or on a clothing rack. Here are two key clamps that show the possibilities:
- Fixing pad single: This collar allows you to secure shelves to the tubes. The collar has a plate with a screw hole attached to it. Slide the collar over the tube, tighten it, and screw the shelf onto the plate. With a double collar, you can secure the shelf at two points.
- Handrail bracket: With a handrail bracket, you can create space between the key clamp and the shelf. This fitting is used if you want to place a shelf above a clothing rail. Slide the key clamp through the handrail bracket and tighten the set screw. The rectangular plate faces upwards, where you can secure the shelf.
Maximum Span
A tube full of clothes can become quite heavy. To prevent sagging, the span of the clothing rail should not be too long. We recommend adding extra support in the middle for spans longer than 2 meters. For larger spans (1.5 to 2 m) and heavy loads, it's best to use the thicker tube diameter of 33.7 mm. But make sure your hanger fit around this diameter tube.
For a Strong Mount
Key clamp material is very sturdy and can bear a lot of weight. It's important that the structure is firmly mounted to the wall/ceiling/floor. The right screws and bolts are essential for this.
Add a Curtain
An open closet might look a bit messy. For an easy and quick solution, you can add a curtain. Tubes are also great for use as curtain rails.
