All frequently asked questions about tubes are answered here. This blog provides detailed information on the materials we offer, available diameters, and essential tips on how to cut tubes and choose the right diameter for your project.

FAQs about Tubes

What is a tube?

A tube is a durable product that will last for years. It was originally used as a stronger alternative to wooden scaffolding. Today, tubes are commonly used in (safety) handrails as well in tube constructions for businesses and shops. They are also popular for creating tube furniture such as tables, cabinets, and coat racks.

What materials are the tubes made from?

The tubes are made from galvanized steel, which is coated with a layer of zinc for increased durability and protection against corrosion.

What tube diameters are available?

At this moment we offer Galvanised steel in diameters: 21.3 mm | 26.9 mm | 33.7 mm | 42.4 mm | 48.3 mm | 60.3 mm

Does a tube diameter refer to the inner or outer diameter?

The diameter refers to the outer diameter of the tube. The corresponding key clamps have the same diameter in their product names, ensuring you select the correct clamp for the tube. The fittings are designed to match the outer diameter of the tube, the inner diameter of the clamp is slightly larger to allow easy fitting over the tube.

What is the wall thickness of the tube?

The wall thickness of tubes varies by diameter. You can find the exact wall thickness of every tube in millimeters on each product page.

What is the inner diameter of the tube?

The inner diameter is calculated by subtracting twice the wall thickness from the outer diameter. For example, a tube with an outer diameter of 48.3 mm and a wall thickness of 3.2 mm would have an inner diameter of (48.3 - 3.2 - 3.2) = 41.9 mm. Keep in mind that tolerances in diameter and wall thickness may cause slight variations. Additionally, steel tubes may have a weld seam on the inside of a few millimeters.

Which tubes fit into each other?

To check if tubes fit together, compare the inside diameter of the larger tube with the outside diameter of the smaller tube.

Note: Due to manufacturing tolerances and weld seams in steel tubes, a slight clearance may be needed for a perfect fit.

Do you cut the tubes to size?

Yes, we offer tube cutting to your desired length, starting from 5 cm. We do not charge a cutting fee. You can specify your preferred length, and the price will be updated immediately.

What is the minimum and maximum tube length I can order?

You can order tubes in lengths from 5 cm up to 640 cm. Note: Tube lengths should be rounded down to the nearest whole centimeter. Custom-cut tubes may have a tolerance of up to 5 mm. When specifying a length down to the millimeter, use a dot instead of a comma.

How do I calculate the correct tube length?

Calculating the correct tube length depends on various factors, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The correct tube length is affected by the used type of fittings an diameter. For example, if you're using base plates, account for the flange thickness. For calculation instructions, check out our tube length guide.

Which tube diameter do I need?

The appropriate tube diameter depends on your design, the span, and the weight the structure needs to support. For example, tables are often made with a 42.4 mm diameter, while smaller projects like coat racks or handrails typically use 26.9 mm or 33.7 mm. For railings and safety constructions, a 42 mm or 48 mm tube diameter is the standard, as these sizes comply with regulations regarding length and load-bearing capacity.

Can the tubes be used outdoors?

Our galvanized tubes are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, thanks to their protective zinc coating. Over time, rust spots may appear on damaged or cut edges, but this will not compromise the structural integrity of your construction. These spots can usually be polished off.

How far does a tube go into a key clamp?

Knowing how far the tube fits into a key clamp can be important for certain projects. For information on measuring and calculation, refer to our full guide: calculating the correct tube length.

Can I paint the tubes?

Yes, you can paint the tubes. Proper surface preparation and the right paint are key for good results. We recommend consulting with a paint expert for the best approach. Additionally, we offer (external) powder coating services for your tubes and fittings (on request by email).

How can I remove the lettering on the tubes?

Some tubes may have black lettering, it can be easily removed using a cloth and thinner. These markings are part of the production process and are for identification purposes.

How quickly can tubes get damaged?

Our tubes are highly durable and resistant to damage. While minor scratches can appear on the surface, they do not affect the tubes' strength. The galvanized tubes are scratch- and impact-resistant, and the rough appearance helps hide any minor scratches.

Is it possible to cut the tubes myself?

While we are happy to cut the tubes to size for you, you can also cut them yourself using a hacksaw, grinder with the correct cutting disc, or an abrasive saw for professional results.

Can holes be drilled in the tubes?

We do not offer a drilling service for the tubes, but it is possible to drill holes yourself. Keep in mind that drilling will weaken the tube's strength and rigidity.

Do you sell bent tubes, or can I bend them myself?

We do not offer bent tubes. Bending tubes is a challenging task due to the thicker walls, so we recommend having this done by an experienced party with professional equipment.

Do you offer accessories?

In addition to the tubes, we also offer a wide range of tube fittings and accessories to complete your tube construction. These include matching bolts, as well as the proper tools for securing the connectors.

How quickly are the tubes delivered?

We aim to ship all orders placed before noon on the same day with next day delivery. However, larger pallet orders are delivered by lorry and can take up to 5 days.
