The DDA Range has been specially developed to meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 (formerly the Disability Discrimination Act) and Part M of the UK Building Regulations. These regulations require that public and commercial buildings make reasonable adjustments to ensure safe and accessible environments for everyone, including those with disabilities.
According to the Building Regulations, handrails should have an external tube diameter between 40 mm and 45 mm. Our DDA key clamp system uses 42.4 mm horizontal tubes (rails) and 48.3 mm vertical tubes (uprights), offering a perfect balance of strength and accessibility compliance.
Why choose DDA key clamps?
Standard key clamps fit around the tube and create a slight external bulge at each joint. This design is not compliant with DDA or Part M requirements, as it can interrupt the smooth handrail surface. The DDA range features special connectors that ensure a flush, smooth transition between tubes — without any visible thickening or obstruction. This provides a continuous handrail that meets accessibility standards and improves both safety and comfort.
Compliant and safe handrail systems
DDA handrail systems are designed to be easily followed by visually impaired users along their entire length, without risk of catching or injury. The smooth, continuous rail meets the tactile and structural requirements outlined in the Equality Act and Part M guidelines.
All DDA fittings are hot-dip galvanized as standard for long-term corrosion resistance, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations. For projects requiring an aesthetic or warmer finish, they can also be supplied in RAL powder-coated colours (subject to quantity and availability). Powder coating also provides a warmer surface to the touch in colder environments.
